ActionAid is an international anti-poverty agency whose aim is to fight poverty worldwide. Formed in 1972, for over 30 years we have been growing- helping over 13 million of the world's poorest and most disadvantaged people in 42 countries worldwide, helping them fight for and gain their rights to food, shelter, work, education, healthcare and a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.

In all of their country programmes they work with local partners to make the most of their knowledge and experience. They have over 2,000 local partner organisations worldwide. Their partners range from small community support groups to national alliances and international networks seeking education for all, trade justice and action against HIV/AIDS. Their work with these national and international campaign networks highlights the issues that affect poor people and influences the way governments and international institutions think. 

They work with communities over many years to strengthen their own efforts to throw off poverty. They make the most of their skills and abilities by working at many levels - local, national, regional and international.

Priority Work Areas:

They have prioritised five areas of work where we can make the most difference:

- education,
- hiv and aids,
- food rights,
- emergencies,
- women and girls and
- governance.

Their project work in Africa, Asia and Latin America is at the heart of what they do. They have developed projects that enable people living in poverty to claim their rights - to, for example, education, food, and drugs for treating hiv/aids.
These issues are often linked, and so they have developed projects that tackle them holistically.

They also campaign and lobby at both national and international levels to change rules and regulations that exacerbate poverty. They also work with foundations headquartered in the United States.

There are three facets to the Partnership Development approach:

• design, management, and evaluation of programme and project funding
• knowledge sharing, mutual learning, and network/alliance building
• analysis to inform our policy and practice, and that of our partners.

During the last year, official institutions and agencies funded a fifth of their global work (just under £16m). Many of these same institutions substantively engaged with ActionAid to inform the development of their policy and practice.
