About

Humanity & Inclusion (former Handicap International) is an independent and impartial aid organization working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster.

They work alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable populations, taking action and bearing witness in order to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights. The expertise and know-how the association has accumulated from its work to support vulnerable people have lead it to campaign at national and international level to ensure people with disabilities are taken into consideration in development projects and policies.

Together with local partners, we develop programs in health and rehabilitation and social and economic integration. They work with local authorities to clear landmines and other war debris and to prevent mine-related accidents through education. They respond fast and effectively to natural and civil disasters in order to limit serious and permanent injuries and to assist survivors' recovery and reintegration. They advocate for the universal recognition of the rights of the disabled through national planning and advocacy.

In 2009, the organisation works in over 60 countries on 268 projects.

Where They Work

Since its beginnings in 1982, they have operated in 63 countries. Their work has benefited several million people in that time.

National Associations

There are eight national associations in the Handicap International Federation: Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Together, they mobilize resources and manage projects around the world.

WHAT THEY DO

Handicap International implements emergency response missions, development programmes and actions against mines and cluster bombs. The association also campaigns to ensure the rights of the most vulnerable populations are acknowledged and upheld.

Emergency

Intervening in emergencies, natural disasters and major conflicts across the world in aid of the most vulnerable sections of society is an integral part of the association’s mandate.

Rehabilitation

For people who have been mutilated or injured as a result of war or a natural disaster, or affected by disease, orthopaedic-fitting followed by functional rehabilitation are the first steps towards restoring their independence.

Their actions against mines and cluster bombs

The association organises demining and prevention actions and policy campaigns to combat the devastation caused by anti-personnel mines.

Physical and mental health

Since health is a stepping stone to social inclusion, Handicap International organises prevention actions and supports the most fragile patients.

Inclusion

Enabling people with disabilities to live with their families and communities as full citizens and promoting equal opportunities are two of their key areas of focus.

Disability rights and policies

Receiving care, going to school, working, loving and expressing yourself: to ensure these fundamental rights are shared by everyone, Handicap International is active in over 60 countries.
